KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has resulted in 1,916 fatalities according to official reports up to August 7. The authorities have identified a total of 4,209 cases during this ongoing health crisis. The current death toll surpasses the previous count of 1,887 by 29. Additionally, officials have announced that 595 individuals are currently under treatment in isolation, while 828 have recovered from the disease.

DR Congo Ebola outbreak passes 1,900 deaths
Health teams track Ebola infections across affected communities in eastern DR Congo.

Ituri continues to be the most severely impacted region, with 3,636 confirmed infections and 1,551 deaths. North Kivu follows with 470 cases and 315 deaths. Haut Uele has reported 91 infections accompanied by 44 deaths, Tshopo has seen nine cases and five fatalities, and South Kivu accounts for three cases and one death. In total, the outbreak has spread to 53 out of 140 health zones across the five provinces reporting confirmed infections.

The latest daily update added 89 new confirmed cases and 21 additional deaths to the national tally. Out of these, Ituri accounted for 73 of the new infections. North Kivu recorded 12 new cases, while Haut Uele added four. Efforts to track contacts are ongoing, with health teams monitoring 83.4% of identified contacts across affected regions. Authorities continue to reconcile data from surveillance, laboratories, and clinical sources as they update the figures related to cases and fatalities.

Ituri remains the epicenter of the expanding outbreak

The outbreak was officially confirmed in May when laboratory testing identified the Bundibugyo virus. The Ministry of Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been coordinating various response measures, including surveillance, testing, isolation, contact tracing, and providing clinical care to those affected. Measures to prevent further spread, such as infection control protocols and safe burial practices, are actively enforced. The virus has spread across several eastern provinces where ongoing insecurity, population movement, and strained healthcare services hinder routine disease management efforts.

Ebola typically manifests through symptoms like fever, intense weakness, body pain, vomiting, and other severe health issues. Some patients experience bleeding as the disease advances. This outbreak marks the 17th documented occurrence of Ebola in the country since the virus was first identified in 1976. The World Health Organization continues to support response operations including case detection, laboratory testing, patient treatment, and infection prevention as health teams track transmission across multiple provinces.

Bundibugyo virus currently has no approved vaccine

Bundibugyo virus differs from the Zaire Ebola strain targeted by existing licensed vaccines. No approved vaccines or specifically authorized treatments are available for Bundibugyo virus disease at this time. Medical teams primarily provide supportive care, including hydration, symptom management, and close patient monitoring. Ongoing research explores potential vaccines and experimental treatments. By late July, Uganda had confirmed 20 cases of Bundibugyo with two deaths; no new cases have been reported there since June 21.

This outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the largest recorded epidemic caused by the Bundibugyo virus and ranks as the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record based on case numbers. The majority of infections and deaths are concentrated in Ituri and North Kivu. Health officials continue efforts involving laboratory testing, contact tracing, isolation, and patient care, updating national figures as new surveillance data becomes available.
