UN Encourages Global Audience to Support Equal Earth Map to Address Mercator Map Flaws

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly passed an international resolution advocating for more precise and equitable portrayals of continental landmasses on world maps. In a recorded vote that garnered backing from 107 member states, the assembly highlighted cartographic distortions that tend to diminish the perceived size of Africa and other equatorial regions within the Global South. UN adopts resolution to correct world map representation as diplomatic delegations take formal action to resolve historical biases embedded within traditional cartographic standards.

UN backs Equal Earth projection to fix Mercator map errors
United Nations General Assembly hall delegates convene during formal international voting sessions.

This international measure specifically targets the widely used Mercator projection, which was first created in the 16th century by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator for navigation at sea. Although it is useful for maritime directions, the mathematical scaling of the Mercator map causes landmasses farther from the equator to appear larger, while those near it are compressed. As detailed in documentation published by the United Nations General Assembly, these technical inaccuracies continue to influence educational textbooks, media broadcasts, digital mapping tools, and official government publications worldwide.

During assembly sessions, delegates acknowledged that cartographic inaccuracies extend beyond technical concerns into socioeconomic and cultural spheres. The assembly pointed out that visual misrepresentations can shape public perceptions of the economic, political, and cultural importance of entire continents. To address this, the UN has endorsed alternative projections like the Equal Earth map introduced in 2018, which accurately shows continental sizes in proportion to each other.

UN Approves Resolution to Correct World Map Distortions and Biases

The resolution follows a campaign led by a coalition of African nations, backed by the African Union, which submitted the draft in August. Supporters of the initiative stressed that traditional maps portraying landmasses like Greenland as equal in size to Africa create serious geographical misunderstandings, considering Africa is actually fourteen times larger. Reports from the Emirates News Agency emphasized that correcting these historical visual biases is an essential step toward establishing fair geographic education across the globe.

As part of the approved resolution, specialized international bodies are instructed to coordinate technical mapping standards. The assembly called on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the United Nations Development Programme to collaborate with academic institutions and geospatial experts. Their goal is to develop updated cartographic guidelines that assist member states and digital media organizations in shifting towards equal-area projection systems across all platforms, public and private alike.

UN Education Agencies Responsible for Developing Accurate Geospatial Standards

Although the resolution promotes voluntary adoption of equal-area map options, it does not impose restrictions on the use of the Mercator projection or legally require private technology companies to alter proprietary software. Instead, the document encourages member nations to incorporate core cartographic principles into their primary and secondary education curricula. Educational authorities are urged to increase awareness among students, scientific communities, and publishers regarding the subtle perceptual biases created by various map projections.

Monitoring of the resolution’s implementation will be conducted by international cartographic associations and geospatial policy groups, especially as educational institutions review textbook standards. Upcoming international geospatial summits are expected to consider updated digital mapping guidelines. Official records of the assembly votes and technical projection standards are available through UN registry portals.
