SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is expanding access to ChatGPT by offering Free and Go users unlimited text conversations with GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that this change will take effect next week and will be implemented with safeguards to prevent misuse. During this rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna will also become the default model for those accounts. Additionally, free users will be provided with a Think button that allows the system to dedicate more time to handling complex questions before delivering a response.

This new feature applies solely to text-based chats and does not eliminate all usage limits across ChatGPT. OpenAI clarified that restrictions will still apply to file uploads, image generation, and other tools that require extra processing power. The Think feature will be introduced alongside unlimited text messaging next week, giving GPT-5.6 Luna enhanced reasoning capabilities for tasks requiring deeper analysis. The company continues to enforce separate controls on features beyond basic text conversations, including tools accessible under different usage allowances.

OpenAI introduced GPT-5.6 as a family of models comprising Luna, Sol, and Terra, with Luna positioned as the faster and more cost-effective option within this lineup. The company stated that ChatGPT now serves approximately one billion users weekly for searches, research, planning, writing, and various other functions. With this latest update, users on Free and Go plans will have Luna as their primary ChatGPT model. The rollout broadens access to the core chat service while maintaining specific limits for tool usage.

Paid subscriptions get an upgraded reasoning engine

Subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Pro will also receive an enhanced version of GPT-5.6 Sol, designed for daily use. Sol is capable of providing quick responses as well as more thorough reasoning within the paid service. OpenAI mentioned that this update results in more targeted answers and minimizes unnecessary details when a simpler response is sufficient. Paid users will also gain a reasoning slider accessible via web, mobile, and desktop platforms, enabling them to control how much processing ChatGPT uses for tasks involving research, planning, coding, writing, and other activities.

The company further reported a decrease in factual inaccuracies based on internal assessments of its latest models. These evaluations focused on financial, medical, and legal prompts requiring detailed factual responses. OpenAI stated that responses containing at least one factual error dropped by approximately 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. For GPT-5.6 Sol, the reduction was about 68%. The company also highlighted improvements in Sol’s handling of dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions, especially when such details are critical to the accuracy of an answer.

Enhanced safety measures are maintained with unlimited text access

OpenAI emphasized that its newest ChatGPT models incorporate additional safeguards for users believed to be under 18. These measures aim to prevent romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and statements that could replace genuine relationships. They also set boundaries concerning sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted substances, and graphic violence. The company noted that new evaluations have been added to monitor responses involving younger users. Despite the expanded access to unlimited text conversations, the same abuse prevention safeguards will remain in place for Free and Go accounts.

This update mainly affects the core ChatGPT experience rather than every OpenAI product utilizing GPT-5.6 models, such as ChatGPT Work and Codex, which are not changing with this release. Paid users are now able to access the improved Sol model and reasoning controls immediately. Meanwhile, Free and Go users will see Luna as their default model this week. The rollout of unlimited text chats and the Think button will occur next week, with separate limits still applying to images, uploads, and other tools.
