KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – Ebola has become the deadliest outbreak recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with government reports indicating 4,945 confirmed cases and 2,325 deaths as of August 16. Over the past 24 hours, officials reported an additional 101 confirmed infections. The current death count exceeds the 2,299 fatalities documented during the Ebola epidemic from 2018 to 2020 in the country.

Since the outbreak was officially declared in May, the virus has continued to spread throughout eastern DRC. United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher remarked that Ebola was claiming approximately one life every 30 minutes. The total number of cases has already surpassed the figure from the previous 2018-2020 outbreak before the latest update. Health officials have identified infections across 54 health zones in six provinces, with Ituri remaining the primary transmission hub, accounting for the majority of confirmed cases.

The current outbreak was officially declared on May 15 after laboratory testing confirmed the presence of the Bundibugyo virus. This marks the 17th recorded Ebola outbreak in the DRC since the virus was first identified in 1976. The World Health Organization designated the situation as a public health emergency of international concern on May 17. Currently, there is no licensed vaccine or approved specific treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. Medical teams are relying on supportive care, along with measures like isolation, testing, contact tracing, and infection prevention to contain the outbreak.

Outbreak Continues to Expand Across Six DRC Provinces

The epidemic has reached the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. Bas-Uélé became the sixth affected province after officials confirmed a case in the Buta health zone, where the patient had traveled from Haut-Uélé before developing symptoms. By August 12, health authorities had documented 965 recoveries nationwide. Meanwhile, response teams are actively monitoring thousands of contacts of confirmed cases to identify new chains of transmission and prevent further spread.

Medical personnel working directly with patients and conducting outbreak control activities have faced significant risks. As of August 9, authorities confirmed at least 155 infections among health workers, including 45 fatalities. Challenges such as insecurity and population displacement have hampered medical operations in several affected areas, while attacks on health facilities have further disrupted surveillance, treatment, and containment efforts in parts of eastern DRC. The World Health Organization continues to support testing, infection control, case management, and response initiatives alongside national health agencies.

Escalating Response as Ebola Death Toll Surpasses Previous Records

In response to the surge in cases and fatalities, health officials have ramped up laboratory testing, surveillance, and treatment capacities across the affected provinces. Efforts remain focused on tracing contacts, managing confirmed cases, and conducting safe burials. Community engagement remains a critical part of the containment strategy, especially in regions with ongoing transmission. Researchers are also investigating experimental vaccines and treatments for Bundibugyo virus disease. A clinical trial involving potential therapies started enrolling confirmed patients in Ituri in July. These experimental products have not yet received approval for routine use against the virus.

Beyond the DRC, the outbreak has led to cases reported in other countries. Uganda documented 20 cases and two deaths before discharging its last patient in July, while France reported one imported case without documented secondary transmission. Currently, the DRC outbreak ranks second worldwide in Ebola-related deaths, behind the 2014 to 2016 West Africa epidemic, which caused 11,310 deaths and 28,616 cases across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, according to historical outbreak records.
