Experts Highlight Surge in South Korea’s Foreign Reserves to $442.28 Billion in August

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – South Korea’s foreign exchange holdings experienced a record-breaking monthly increase in August, culminating in a total of $442.28 billion by month’s end. According to the Bank of Korea, this represents a rise of $14.33 billion from the $427.95 billion recorded at the close of July. Notably, this is the largest monthly gain since the institution began tracking official reserves in 1971, boosting the country’s holdings to their highest point since May 2022 and marking a significant acceleration compared to the modest increases of the previous two months.

South Korea foreign reserves reach $442.28 billion in August
South Korea recorded its largest monthly increase in foreign exchange reserves in August.

The growth in South Korea’s reserves marks the third consecutive month of increase, following rises of $370 million in June and $590 million in July. The August jump surpassed the previous monthly record of $14.29 billion set in May 2009. Despite the impressive growth, the total reserves still lag behind the all-time high of $469.21 billion reached in October 2021. These figures reflect assets within the official foreign exchange reserve holdings, expressed in U.S. dollars, and are used to gauge the country’s international financial stability.

The Bank of Korea attributed the August reserve increase to a combination of factors, including higher foreign currency deposits, returns from reserve asset management, and fluctuations in exchange rates. Changes in currency values can influence the dollar value of holdings in euros, pounds, and other currencies, as the central bank converts these into U.S. dollars when calculating total reserves. Consequently, movements in major exchange rates can either inflate or diminish the reported reserve figures, even if the underlying foreign currency assets remain consistent within the portfolio.

Growth Driven by Securities and Foreign Currency Deposits in August

Foreign securities continue to constitute the largest part of South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves. Their value increased by $7.07 billion in August, reaching $387.07 billion, which accounts for 87.5% of the total reserves. This category includes both government and corporate securities held among official reserve assets. Additionally, foreign currency deposits experienced a sharp rise, climbing by $7.17 billion to $30.30 billion. These increases in deposits and securities played a prominent role in the overall expansion of reserves during the month.

Smaller adjustments were observed in other reserve categories. Special drawing rights grew by $60 million to $15.77 billion, while the reserve position stood at approximately $4.34 billion. Gold holdings remained unchanged at $4.79 billion. Combined, securities and foreign currency deposits accounted for nearly the entire $14.33 billion increase in August. This demonstrates that despite deposits registering one of the largest individual component increases, the reserve structure remains predominantly focused on securities.

Reserve Total Reaches Four-Month High, Signaling Stronger External Assets

The August total marked South Korea’s highest reserve level in over four years. The previous peak of $447.71 billion was recorded in May 2022, and the latest figure narrows the gap with the record high of $469.21 billion registered in October 2021. Official foreign exchange reserves comprise securities, deposits, gold, special drawing rights, and the country’s reserve position within the international monetary system. The government releases these figures monthly as part of routine reporting on the nation’s external financial holdings.

The recent data reveal a notable shift in the pace of reserve accumulation during the summer months. After modest increases in June and July, August delivered a record monthly rise, ending with $442.28 billion in foreign exchange reserves—almost $14.3 billion more than the previous month. While still below the historical peak, this level represents the highest since May 2022, supported primarily by gains in securities, foreign currency deposits, and the dollar valuation of certain reserve assets.
