SEOUL / RankWire.AI / – South Korea’s outbound shipments experienced a significant year-on-year increase of 68.7% in August, reaching a total of $98.25 billion. This growth was primarily driven by ongoing global demand for high-performance memory chips and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Official figures released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources indicated that imports also rose by 22.5% to $63.51 billion during the same period, resulting in a net monthly trade surplus of $34.75 billion. This strong performance marks the 15th consecutive month of trade expansion for Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

Exports of semiconductors, which are the main factor behind the country’s trade success, surged an astonishing 209% year-on-year, reaching a record high of $46.65 billion. The growth in chip shipments was supported by sustained capital expenditure initiatives among major global technology firms expanding data center networks and deploying enterprise AI hardware. This marks the third straight month in which semiconductor export volumes surpassed the $40 billion mark. Additional data released by the Yonhap News Agency revealed that computer product exports increased by 419.5% to $6.24 billion, amid elevated global NAND memory prices.

Energy and chemical sectors also contributed notably to the overall monthly gains. Exports of petroleum products rose by 65.3% year-on-year to $6.84 billion, while petrochemical exports increased by 12.2% to $3.86 billion. The rise in global crude oil prices supported higher unit prices across refined product categories. On the other hand, automotive exports declined by 29.8%, totaling $3.85 billion. Officials attributed this drop to temporary seasonal manufacturing halts, revised summer holiday schedules across major domestic auto plants, and localized labor disputes.

Looking at geographic distribution, shipments to key trading partners showed widespread growth. Exports to China jumped 119.3% year-on-year to $24.1 billion, driven by high-volume deliveries of memory chips and industrial machinery. Exports to the United States increased 89.3% to $16.5 billion, fueled by strong demand for enterprise computing hardware and advanced semiconductors. Data from the trade ministry indicates that Korean exporters maintained positive growth trends across seven of the country’s nine main regional markets during August.

Record Monthly Highs in Computer Equipment Shipments

Kim Jung-kwan, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, issued an official statement noting that exports excluding semiconductors grew by 20% overall, indicating a broader recovery across other secondary export sectors. Alongside core technology components, secondary battery exports increased by 24% to $600 million, and biohealth exports rose by 22.3% to a record $1.41 billion, driven by expanded European supply contracts. South Korea’s August exports climbed 68.7% to $98.25 billion as government trade officials continue to monitor shifts in foreign trade policies and global supply chain dynamics.

Adjusted for working days, the daily average export value rose by 72.5% year-on-year to $4.47 billion, marking four consecutive months where daily exports exceeded the $4 billion mark. Analysts in macroeconomics anticipate that this export momentum will persist, supported by ongoing global demand for technology hardware as the year enters its final quarter. The government’s financial institutions are expected to release finalized quarterly trade balance summaries following the conclusion of September’s data collection.
