KATHMANDU, NEPAL / RankWire.AI / – The United Nations is seeking $49.6 million for a four-month emergency response to Nepal’s August floods. The flash appeal targets 84,270 people, including nearly 40% who are children. It covers 19,284 households in 17 municipalities across six districts. Those districts include Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha and Tanahu. Relief priorities include shelter, food, health care, clean water, sanitation, protection and winter support. The floods struck on Aug. 26 and devastated communities along major river corridors.

Humanitarian teams support flood-hit communities across northern Nepal with essential aid.

A glacial collapse sent water, mud and debris through settlements along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system and nearby areas. By Sept. 6, the death toll had climbed above 1,300. Nearly 5,000 people remained missing as search teams continued work across affected districts. Crews searched damaged villages, riverbanks and hydropower tunnels for survivors and victims. Rescue teams also reached isolated communities after roads and bridges failed. Several survivors emerged days after the disaster, while emergency operations continued across the region.

The floods destroyed homes, schools, roads, bridges and local power and water systems. Damage to transport links left some mountain communities difficult to reach. The Government of Nepal leads the national relief effort across the affected districts. Humanitarian partners are supporting that response with emergency supplies and services. Their work includes temporary shelter, medical care, food assistance and water treatment. Teams are also helping restore electricity access and support rural households that lost livestock or other sources of income.

    Emergency funding targets basic services

The $49.6 million appeal covers 10 humanitarian sectors through the end of 2026. Food security accounts for about $7.94 million of the requirement. Water and sanitation needs total about $7.9 million, while health needs require roughly $7.6 million. Logistics and emergency telecommunications account for about $7.33 million. Shelter needs total about $7.1 million. Together, those areas make up most of the requested funding as relief teams address immediate needs across flood-hit communities.

Access remains a major obstacle in parts of northern Nepal, especially in upper Rasuwa. Damaged roads and bridges have slowed deliveries and forced some teams to travel on foot. Humanitarian assessments identified 3,844 displaced people living at 34 displacement sites across four areas. They also recorded 4,288 affected households, including 2,886 displaced households. Families at those sites need shelter, food, drinking water and sanitation support. Cold-weather preparation has also become part of the response as aid operations continue.

    Supplies move toward hardest-hit districts

UNICEF received 84 metric tonnes of emergency supplies in Kathmandu on Sept. 4 for distribution to affected communities. The shipment included water tanks, hygiene kits and water treatment materials. It also carried diarrhoea treatment equipment, tents, winter clothing and learning supplies. Trucks then began moving the items toward Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. The supplies support safe water access, health services, disease prevention and education needs. Children and families in isolated areas remain a central focus of the humanitarian response.

The appeal also allows direct cash assistance in places where local markets can still serve affected families. Other measures include temporary shelter materials, portable solar equipment and support for damaged water systems. Health services cover emergency treatment, nutrition and other urgent care. Protection work includes help for children separated from relatives during the disaster. Food assistance and livestock support form part of the wider relief plan. The funding request is designed to sustain essential services while Nepal continues rescue, relief and early recovery work.
