The law creates a specific exemption for qualified generators that connect via standard household outlets. A designated notified body must verify that each plug complies with the relevant BS 1363 safety standards. While the safety amendment applies across England, Wales, and Scotland, the product approval rules will cover the entire UK market.
The interim standard outlines requirements related to electrical design, mounting, fire safety, labeling, and consumer instructions. It also addresses safe disconnection procedures and limits on electricity exported into household circuits. A technical study tested representative plug-in systems on domestic wiring under controlled conditions, confirming their safe operation without any signs of unsafe energization. The study also identified quality differences among products, including export controls and electromagnetic compatibility, which contributed to refining the final specifications.
Stakeholder feedback influences retail product rollout
In the course of its public consultation, the government received 466 responses regarding plug-in solar systems. Over 85% of respondents supported the interim specification, with the majority also endorsing the proposed plug-in amendment. Contributors included installers, manufacturers, network operators, technical experts, and members of the general public. Some raised concerns about older wiring installations and products offered without proper certification, while others emphasized the need for clear guidance to avoid confusion between plug-in solar panels and plug-in battery systems, which remain outside the scope of the new regulations.
Preparations for retail launch are progressing ahead of the August implementation date, involving key market players in discussions about compliant products. These rules primarily target small systems designed for balconies, gardens, and other suitable outdoor locations. They do not include plug-in batteries or devices that store electricity imported from household circuits. Systems intending to connect via the new method cannot operate legally before August 27. After that date, only those products authorized within the 800-watt limit and meeting the standards may be plugged into a household socket.
