DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The World Health Organization indicates that if sufficient resources are allocated, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could be contained within three months. As of August 16, official data recorded 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 fatalities. The disease has spread across six provinces and 55 health zones, with an approximate case fatality rate of 47%. This marks the deadliest Ebola outbreak ever documented in the country.

Thierno Baldé, WHO incident manager, stated that the timeline for containment hinges on maintaining adequate staffing, supplies, and operational support. To date, about $69.3 million of the required $115 million has been mobilized. During a two-week span, health teams established over 400 new treatment beds. They also dispatched 100 additional epidemiologists and more than 500 community health workers, who are vital for surveillance, contact tracing, case identification, and patient referrals. The response effort also involves deploying ambulances, vehicles, medical supplies, and trained personnel across the impacted regions.

Transmission has now reached Bas-Uélé, making it the sixth province affected by the outbreak. Although Ituri continued to be the primary transmission hub in mid-August, accounting for the majority of confirmed cases and deaths, officials report that many recent infections lack any known link to existing patients. This gap underscores the urgency of faster case detection and contact monitoring. In response, teams have expanded surveillance activities to identify cases earlier and facilitate quicker transfer of patients into treatment centers.

Expansion of Response Efforts Across the Affected Regions

The Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare of the Democratic Republic of the Congo declared the outbreak on May 15. Laboratory testing confirmed the presence of Bundibugyo virus, one of the pathogens responsible for Ebola disease. Since its identification in 1976, the country has experienced 17 Ebola outbreaks. Additionally, neighboring Uganda has reported cases linked to the wider outbreak. In Uganda, authorities confirmed 20 infections and two deaths, with no new cases reported after June 21.

Currently, there is no licensed vaccine or specific treatment approved for Bundibugyo virus disease. Consequently, medical efforts focus on early diagnosis, supportive care, infection prevention, and swift contact tracing. Efforts also include safe burials and community outreach to curb further spread. Local health workers play a critical role in identifying suspected cases and guiding patients to treatment centers. Authorities have provided hygiene materials and trained personnel within affected communities, emphasizing that early supportive care remains essential for those exhibiting Ebola symptoms.

Surveillance and Funding are Critical for Effective Containment

While contact monitoring saw improvements during August, it still fell short of public health targets in certain areas. By August 12, response teams were tracking 17,460 of the 20,740 contacts listed—approximately 84%. Additional field epidemiologists have been deployed to enhance detection capabilities and reduce delays between symptom onset and treatment. Community health workers actively report suspected cases and facilitate patient access to care. Medical personnel have faced significant risks, with over 150 infections among health workers recorded by early August.

On May 17, the outbreak was designated a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Both national authorities and international health partners continue efforts including laboratory testing, clinical care, surveillance, safe burials, and community engagement. The latest weekly reports indicate an increase in confirmed cases and deaths compared to previous weeks. Baldé emphasized that the three-month containment assessment hinges on securing the necessary resources to sustain these activities. Despite ongoing challenges, health teams persist in working within insecure zones and regions with disrupted medical services.
