A meteorological station located in Wieselburg, Lower Austria, recorded a high of 40.3 degrees Celsius. On June 28, Vienna recorded 40.0 degrees, and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg reached 40.1 degrees one day later. Many locations at lower altitudes endured a stretch of between 10 and 14 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.
Researchers from the University of Graz’s Wegener Center estimate that the combined heatwaves in June and late July resulted in approximately €1.4 billion in socioeconomic damages. This estimate encompasses health impacts, reduced labor productivity, agricultural losses, infrastructure stress, and increased cooling demand. It also accounts for ecological pressures and strain on public services. It’s important to note that this figure is not a final government damage assessment and differs from insured-loss estimates, which only reflect claims covered by insurance policies.
Heat Severity Surpasses Previous National Benchmark
The assessment of both heat events used the area-degree days metric, which integrates temperature, duration, and geographic extent. The June heatwave registered approximately 16,700 area-degree days. In comparison, the late July event is estimated to have ranged between 22,700 and 25,000. Austria’s previous record was set during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which measured around 22,100 area-degree days over land areas below 1,500 meters in elevation.
The early summer heat also correlated with a significant increase in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety reported an estimated 395 deaths during June 2026, marking the highest June figure since tracking began. Heat-related mortality is calculated based on deaths exceeding expected levels during periods of extreme heat; it does not necessarily mean heat was the sole medical cause on every death certificate.
Intense Drought Amplifies Challenges Across Austria
Prior to the heatwave, Austria faced months of significantly below-average rainfall. From January 1 to July 27, total nationwide precipitation amounted to roughly 426 millimeters, well below the average of 609 millimeters for that period, indicating a near 30% deficit. Authorities have described the first seven months of 2026 as the driest since at least the early 20th century, with Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland among the regions experiencing the most severe water shortages.
Persistent high-pressure systems, abundant sunshine, and minimal rainfall led to increased evaporation through May, June, and July, depleting soil moisture and putting stress on crops, rivers, forests, and regional water supplies. Climate records in Austria reveal that heatwaves are now more frequent and tend to last longer than in previous decades. The average peak temperatures during such events have risen by about three degrees between the 1980s and the 2020s. The recent July record marks yet another milestone in Austria’s documented trend of escalating extreme heat.
