The Central Bank of Egypt announced this provisional figure on September 7. Prior to this, reserves were reported at $56.2939 billion at the end of July. This represents a monthly increase of approximately $920.6 million, or 1.6%. Notably, this is the first time Egypt’s official reserve holdings have surpassed the $57 billion mark.

This August figure continues a consistent upward trend observed throughout 2026. Starting the year with reserves totaling $52.5938 billion in January, Egypt’s reserves gradually grew each month, reaching $52.7455 billion in February, $52.8306 billion in March, $53.0092 billion in April, and $53.1342 billion in May. By August, the total reserves had increased by roughly $4.62 billion from January and about $5.76 billion from the end of December 2025.
The pace of growth gained momentum mid-year. Reserves increased from $53.1342 billion in May to $55.0723 billion in June. The upward trend continued with a rise to $56.2939 billion in July, culminating in the record August total. These three months alone contributed more than $4 billion to Egypt’s reserve pool. Compared to August 2025, the latest reserve figure is about $7.96 billion higher, indicating an approximate annual growth rate of 16.2%.
Remittances from abroad bolster foreign currency reserves
Remittances sent by Egyptians working overseas also reached a historic high during the fiscal year 2025/2026. The Central Bank of Egypt stated that these inflows totaled around $47.3 billion, up from roughly $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year, marking an increase of 29.6%. Specifically, remittances in June alone amounted to about $4.2 billion, which is 15.6% higher than the approximately $3.6 billion recorded in June 2025.
Egypt’s latest balance of payments figures encompass the first nine months of fiscal year 2025/2026. During the July to March period, Egypt recorded a current account deficit of $14.6 billion, while the capital and financial account saw net inflows totaling $9.9 billion. The overall balance during this period was a deficit of $1.8 billion, providing the most recent official snapshot of Egypt’s external accounts before the August reserve update.
Consistent monthly reserve records highlight ongoing upward trend in 2026
The series of monthly reserve figures has continually reached new nominal highs throughout 2026. Reserves surpassed $55 billion in June, moved above $56 billion in July, and in August, recorded the first figure exceeding $57 billion. Egypt now reports three consecutive month-end reserve totals above $55 billion. The August level is also more than 10% higher than the $51.4516 billion recorded at the end of December 2025.
These latest figures place Egypt’s net international reserves at their highest point ever recorded. Additionally, they reflect an unbroken monthly increase since January. Every month from January to August has shown a rise over the previous month’s total. Although the August figure remains provisional based on the central bank’s reporting standards, the data clearly indicate a steady growth in Egypt’s reserve stock during the first eight months of 2026.
